A tangible tool for getting ahold of worried, wandering, worn-down, overwhelmed, or just plain wrong thoughts and for walking in God’s peace.
We each have different struggles in our lives, but our minds can be our most treacherous battlegrounds. The great news is that we do not have to be slaves to our thoughts (Romans 6). Martin Luther said, “You cannot keep birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair.”
2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (NIV).
The word “arguments” in this verse comes from the Greek “logismos” (plural: logismoi). Logismoi are calculated arguments, thoughts, and the “bottom-line” reasoning that reflects what we think. They trigger reactions and emotions in us. The desert fathers described logismoi as the thoughts and images that come to distract us and lead us away from Christ, calling them “the preoccupations, the ‘trains of thoughts’ that attack the inner life in order to divert us away from our identity, vocation, and personhood,” (Celtic Daily Prayer, Vol II).
When I'm struggling with thoughts that worry me or wear me out, I often have a hard time just praying inside of my head. I want to take my thoughts captive and surrender them to Christ, but I need something tangible to attach to my prayers. A tangible way to get my anxious thoughts out and replace them with the truth.
How about you--would something tangible help you to get out of your head so you can lay your thoughts down?
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus," (Philippians 4:6-7).
Ever since God put it on my heart to create the Captive Cards, they've been an incredible resource to me, whether I'm lying awake in the middle of the night, feeling overwhelmed as I work my way through a long to-do list, wondering about how someone interpreted what I said, or wearing thin from whatever challenge I’m facing. My prayer is that they'll be helpful to you, too. You can hook them to your keys, hang them in your kitchen, keep them by your bed, even take individual cards off and set them where you know you’ll need them later.
Each card has a word or phrase on the front and thought-provoking action steps and Bible verses on the back. Because of how important it is to know that God’s Word is a whole with many parts that all work together seamlessly, and not just a bunch of disjointed pieces, I’ve also added cross-referencing passages to each card. These give you an opportunity to dig deeper in Bible study, and they’ll help you see how each verse and concept fits into the greater context of the whole Bible.
Whatever the thoughts that may be that are weighing us down, we can go through the cards, one-by-one, working through what each one says and filling our minds with God’s Word. They help us to focus on Jesus. They help to direct our prayers into action. They help us to TAKE our thoughts captive, REPLACE them with the truth, SURRENDER them to Christ, and RESOLVE to live it.
22 ways to help you tangibly take your thoughts captive and fill your mind with God’s peace.
22 cards to help you get out of your head when your thoughts are weighing you down--to help you fix your eyes on Jesus.
